Oscar Ho is a dynamic and versatile musician who is rapidly carving out a name for himself in the jazz and classical worlds. Currently studying jazz at the prestigious Guildhall School of Music & Drama, Oscar’s journey as a double bassist and multi-instrumentalist showcases a profound dedication to musical excellence and innovation.
Oscar’s musical roots trace back to Chetham’s School of Music, where he studied from 2019 to 2021. During this formative period, he developed his craft in both jazz and classical double bass under the mentorship of Steve Berry, a renowned jazz bassist and educator, and Rachel Meerloo of the Hallé. His remarkable progress earned him the coveted “Ida Carroll Scholarship,” marking him as one of Chetham’s most promising string players. Oscar’s contributions extended to high-profile performances with the Chetham’s Symphony Orchestra, including Mahler’s Symphony No. 8, and he was an integral part of the Chetham’s Big Band, led by the esteemed Richard Iles.
Not confined to the double bass alone, Oscar’s musical versatility shone early in his career. In 2018, he clinched first place at the “Northern Region Music Championship” for classical guitar, complementing a series of awards at regional music festivals. This diverse foundation has shaped him into a musician capable of excelling across genres.
Since moving to London, Oscar has embraced a range of musical endeavours, from performing with function bands and orchestras to collaborating on theatrical productions. At Guildhall, his education has been enriched by lessons with acclaimed faculty members such as Steve Watts, Tom Farmer, James Maddren, and more. Additionally, he has had the privilege of working with legendary jazz figures like Norma Winstone and Scott Stroman, further honing his artistry.
